Yamdrok Lake

We are enjoying the outdoor weather at our Asian paradise; can you imagine a better plan than swimming in one of our Asian-style pools? Today from our luxury hotel in Alicante Asia Gardens Hotel & Thai Spa we want to tell you about the amazing Yamdrok Lake.

Yamdrok Lake, also known as Yamdrok Yumtso, is one of the three sacred lakes of Tibet, along with Namtso Lake, which we have already told you about, and Lake Manasarovar Lake, and one of the most important Chinese lakes. It is located 100 kilometres northeast of Lhasa.

Like mountains, lakes are considered sacred by Tibetan people. They believe they are the dwellings of protective and therefore invested with special spiritual powers. In particular, Yamdrok Lake is thought to be divinatory. According to local mythology, the lake is the incarnation of a goddess.

Yamdrok Lake is 4500 metres above sea level and is over 72 km long. The lake is surrounded by many snow-capped mountains. It is fan-shaped, spreading to the south but narrowing up to the north and is characterized by its turquoise colour.

The lake freezes in winter, but its location offers nice weather year round so tourists can enjoy the beauty of this landscape any time of the year.
