Traditional Korean painting
The Asian continent never stops surprising us at the luxury hotel in Alicante Asia Gardens Hotel & Thai Spa. Today we are travelling to Korea to find out more about traditional Korean painting.
Korea has a history of more than 4,000 years, but it was in the 3rd and 4th century when traditional Korean painting started to be developed. The first paintings were the murals on sepulchres until the 15th century when paintings on paper and silk first started.
From the beginning, due to the materials and the time needed for its learning and perfection, Korean painting was only performed by nobles and high society. However, throughout the years, it became accessible for everyone.
Lines and beauty of space are very important for Korean painting. It is related to nature and it is known for its elegance. The main materials used are paper, silk, paintbrush, ink and natural colouring.
The main theme for Korean painting is sagunja, which is comprised by four plants and flowers: orchid, bamboo, plum and chrysanthemun. The four gracious plants also represent the four seasons.
