Sri Lanka´s Cultural Triangle
Today at the luxury hotel in Alicante Asia Gardens Hotel & Thai Spa we say goodbye to May as we most like: discovering a new Asian spot. We are travelling to Sri Lanka to visit its famous Cultural Triangle. Are you coming?
Sri Lanka´s Cultural Triangle is the name given to the historical region located in the centre of the island, covering an area, which includes several World Heritage cultural sites. The island’s three historic capitals mark the points of the triangle: Kandy, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura. Within the area of this triangle we find two other important areas: Dambulla and Sigiriya.
Kandy. Known as the mountain capital, this city is famous for the Temple of the Tooth, which houses Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic: Buddha´s left upper canine tooth.
Polonnawura. It became the second ancient capital of Sri Lanka, after the destruction of Anuradhapura. It is made up of a complex of ruins of religious and civil buildings. Many people think this area is one of the best archaeological relic sites in the country. Its Laying Buddha is considered one of the most perfect sculptures in the country.
Anuradhapura. This is the ancient capital of Ceylon. Here we find the Mahabodhi Temple Complex, one of the most important sacred places in the country, which is home to the famous Bodhi Tree. They are both World Heritage cultural sites.
Dambulla. Located north of Kandy, it is home to the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka: Dambulla Cave Temple. Its pink quartz mountains are another important attraction; they are the biggest ones South Asia.
Sigiriya. This is one of the most visited areas in Sri Lanka. Here we find the ruins of an ancient palace complex, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1982. According to some legends, Sirigiya is the 8th Wonder of the World. But its main tourist attraction is the Lion Rock, which offers the best views of Sri Lanka.
