Gunung Rinjani
May has arrived at the luxury hotel in Alicante Asia Gardens Hotel & Thai Spa, and how about celebrating it by travelling to Indonesia to discover Rinjani volcano?
Gunung Rinjani is an active volcano in Indonesia. It is located on the island of Lombok. It is also one of the highest volcanoes in the country, specifically the second highest one. It rises to over 3,700 metres.
On the top of the volcano there is a 6-by-8,5-kilometre caldera, which is filled by the crater lake called Segara Anak. This lake is approximately 2,000 metres above sea level and about 200 metres deep. The caldera also contains hot springs.
The Gunung Rinjani volcano and the caldera are protected by the Gunung Rinjani National Park, which was established in 1997.
There are different routes to reach the top of the Gunung Rinjani volcano, but the main access points are Senaru to the north, and Sembalun to the east. Although Lombok is not a very famous tourist destination, it is a very popular place for trekking lovers. Rinjani is considered as a sacred volcano and reaching its crater is one of trekkers´ goals.
Trekking is only allowed between April and December. The route goes from a height of 700 metres to 3,726 metres.
